I can not believe how sharp the images are with either lens, even the 400 DO II with a 1.4X III. I shoot with a Canon 7D MkII and always shoot RAW.
Reikan has the advantage of the software during the dirty work for me!ĭue to my advancing age and my desire to travel lighter, I switched from a Canon 500 f4 II and Canon 300 f4 to a Canon 400 f4 DO II and a Canon 100-400 II. As well, any comments of Reikan Focal are welcomed (please note: I have tried using Spyder's LensCal in the past with other lens/teleconverter combos, but I never felt confident in my work. So any comments on the sharpness of the zoom is appreciated. As well, I am aware that the focal length advantage is in favor of the 300 + TC combo (420mm vs ~380), but the 100-400 II has the advantage of zoom. I was shooting at f/6.3 much of the time for more depth of field, so the max f/4 wasn't much of an advantage. But I'm wondering if the 100-400 II can keep pace with that combo. What WAS in focus with my 300/2.8 II + 1.4 III combo was razor sharp.

I am considering buying Reikan Focal, but at the same time I have been considering buying a 500/4 II (with my recent 500 version I sale money) and selling the 300 II in favor of a 100-400 II for a lighter, more portable option. Unfortunately, I was left with very few keepers as the point of focus was consistently in front of the bird's face (my intended target). I recently took my 300/2.8 IS II out for a spin with a 1.4x III attached at a local hot spot for migratory birds.
